Film Industry (P2)
FILM INDUSTRY
The last film I watched was Fantastic Mr Fox. The film is a stop motion animation and I watched it on Disney+. Within the class, nobody watched their most recent film in the cinema and half of the class watched their most recent film alone. This differs to around 10 years ago, where the majority of people would likely have watched it in the cinema.
In cinemas, there are seasonal variations. For example, in October there are many horror films being shown due to Halloween upcoming. These are different globally as certain countries may not release certain films. For example, if a country is highly religious and the majority of people don't celebrate Halloween, it is unlikely that Halloween films will be shown. Seasonal variations can also link to the time in history and the current events in the world. For example, 'The Apprentice' was released during the American 2024 election. This is likely to link to the election as it is being constantly talked about, which could promote the film.
Cinemas also heavily rely on sequels and prequels. This could link to David Hesmondhalgh's theory that "industries rely on repetition through the use of stars, genres, franchises". This essentially means that in order to keep the audience, new films need to be released every so often. Despite sequels only making up under 5% of the film industry, they make up around 45.8% of cinema releases.
However, the Joker 2 was released and it was estimated that they would make a loss of 100 million dollars. Due to the success of the first film, DC assumed that the sequel would go well, however it did the opposite. This could be due to the fact that they changed the movie style and changed it to a musical.
