A new Snow White movie is being released in March 2025. The original Snow White was the first feature-length film.
There are some names that were considered but didn't make the film. These are: Awful, Dirty, Lazy, Flabby, Tearful and Shifty.
These names would never be approved today- this shows the evolution of films and how society has moved on from names like these. They all also suffer from dwarfism and are isolated from everyone else. This would not be allowed in modern film.
Snow White does housework while the dwarfs (men) work.
Story behind Snow White
In Disney films, there aren't many 'good parents'. This is likely a reflection of Walter Disney's childhood as he grew up with a father that didn't treat him very well.
Walter also grew up with animals and found comfort and safety in nature. This could link to how close Snow White is with the forest animals.

Developments from 1928-1937
- Dialogue
- Movement
- Colour
- Frames per second
Snow White is a good case study because:
- Franchises
- Technology
- Global developments
- Vertical and horizontal integration of companies
The film was both a critical (critics gave it good reviews) and commercial (high revenue) success.
Walt received an Oscar in 1939 for the achievement of Snow White. He was given a full sized Oscar, as well as 7 mini Oscars to represent the dwarfs.
The movie was adapted into the first Disney-produced musical at Radio City Music Hall in the 1940s.

1- One person in charge (Walt Disney). He tied his Snow White voice actor to such a tight control that she didn't work on another movie (she signed a contract agreeing that she wouldn't). This is because he wanted Snow White's voice to be unique and not from another movie.
1:23:00- The duration of the film
6 million- Made 6 million on its opening weekend in America
418 million- The total amount of money made in total at the time. This does not include VHS, DVDs etc.
1.5 million- The estimated budget (it was initially meant to be much less). This is nothing compared to modern films.
1812- based on the Grimm Brothers' original fairytale from 1812- audiences were quite familiar with it already
- Her dress is red, when it is blue in the more recent movie. The prince also looks different. This is because when the poster was made, they hadn't finished the film. They didn't perfect the prince until 6 months before the release, and they had to send out posters before this.
- They included pretty much every character on the poster. This usually doesn't happen in modern films, as there is usually only a few.
- Hand drawn
- They made it clear that it was the first full length feature production. This is likely to make more people want to watch it.
- Walt Disney's name is large and almost the same size as the title. It also says 'His first full length feature production'. This shows that he was extremely proud of it and wanted to get his name out there.
- At a glance, you can see the personalities of the dwarfs. The only character who's personality cant really be seen is Snow White herself.
- 'Multiplane technicolour'- two new technologies not seen before.

SNOW WHITE IN THE CINEMA
- Screenings were sold out months in advance
- There was a resale market for tickets
- A ticket was only around 25 cents for a child, so they made a crazy amount of money.
- It was the highest grossing film of all time when it was made

RE-ISSUES
The film was re-issued (screened again) 8 times in cinemas. It was first released in 1944, in order to raise revenue for the Disney studio during WWII. This re-release set a tradition of re-releasing Disney animated features every few years. Snow White was re-released to theatres in 1952, 1958, 1967, 1975, 1983, 1987, and 1993. This is why there is so many different posters, because they were constantly re-issuing.___________________________________________________________________________________

VINYLS
Snow White was the first ever film to have its soundtrack released- initially on vinyl record. Out of the 25 songs written for the production, only 8 made it into the final film. Many people are returning to vinyls and record players in more recent times. they are the fastest growing form of music listening.
LASER DISC
An early rival to DVD- which eventually lost the battle and became defunct (no longer existing). This
was mainly due to the fact that people had to purchase a laser disc reader. This was different to DVD as people could play it on the best selling games console (PlayStation).

VHS
Disney store exclusive VHS release with soundtrack and Dopey toy. This made people more eager to purchase it. When it was released on VHS, they said that it was there 'for a limited time'.
DVD
The DVD release pattern for Disney is unusual in the industry. They have tended to bring out a new version with bonus material (such as deleted scenes), then put it in the 'Disney Vault'. This means that nobody can purchase it for 10 years. They then bring out another one with even more unseen, behind the scenes content.
DISNEY +
An example of vertical integration and online streaming/on demand. Disney + launched 2019/2020 which was a huge hit due to covid. They now have around 160 million subscribers globally. Audience expectations have changed as we now expect to be able to watch a movie on demand, but people waited years for VHS tapes to be released.

- The public told Walt to abandon the idea as the bright colours would hurt people's eyes, but Walt was determined to make it work
- 150 million worldwide signed up to Disney +
- Even the leading animator didn't believe it would work
- Walt was going to call Mickey 'Mortimer' but his wife thought it was "too sissy"
- A hat salesman told Walt that he could promote Disney with merchandise
- Walt's family moved house to a rural area surrounded by nature. He killed an owl and felt guilty for months, so he included animals as beacons of innocence in Snow White

ROTOSCOPING
Rotation, movement
Rotation, movement
Live action filmed first which shows realistic movements. Then, the video is cut down into frames and traced over with tracing paper.
CELS
A transparent sheet where objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation. Short for celluloid. Snow White is 24 cels per second (fps). This is the industry standard for films.
An original, framed cel being put up for auction
The animators wore gloves to make sure that the paint didn't smudge. They painted the front and back of the cell in order to make the colours brighter and smoother.
TECHNICOLOR
- Huge leap forward in how realistic films could be.
- It is a complicated technical process where dye is transferred to 3 separate film strips. This makes it very expensive.
- By 1932, Walt was making an enormous investment in technicolor, and later bought exclusive rights to it.
- Many believed that colour cinematography was a fad.
- Actors complained that colour took away the beauty of shadow and light in film, and executives noted that colour films made no more money at the box office than black and white films.
- In 1940, only 12% of Hollywood films were shot in colour.
- Cyan, yellow and magenta dyes are the most commonly used as they can mix to create other colours such as red, blue, black and green.
